The Lady of Sorrows

Giovanni Francesco Pieri (1699-1773)
1759, Polychrome wax on wood

The material used – wax – heightens the dramatic portrayal of the face and the pained expression. Even the material and the veil are made of the same material. A pupil of Florentine Giovacchino Fortini (1670-1736), Pieri combined a successful career as a medallist with important work as a wax artist, producing both portraits and more sumptuous and complex compositions.
