Egyptian Dancer (Cleopatra)

Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947)
20th century, Bronze and ivory

This bronze statuette depicts a dancer in oriental dress, dancing with legs crossed and arms raised. Her particularly elegant pose is complemented by the refined details of her sandals and headdress, while her necklace and bracelets, with their red and green detailing, provide some colourful accents. In contrast with other, similar sculptures by Chiparus, the body parts are not made of ivory, but, rather, it is completely executed in bronze, while the base is made of veined black marble with bronze panels.
