SERGIO HERNÁNDEZ’
TRES PASIONES

17 September 2016 – 20 November 2016

curated by Giorgio Antei and Laura Casalis
Fondazione Franco Maria Ricci

In the beginning, there was not the Beginning, but the End: that of old civilizations destroyed by those who came from the West. Mexican artists, each in their own way, have always declared the trauma of their origin to be a paradoxical catastrophe.

Born in Oaxaca, the Mixtec city of Rufino Tamayo, fifty-nine-year-old artist Sergio Hernández expresses this uniquely Central American trait through the use of swarming, toxic colors: alchemical references abound in his fiery cinnabar, cobalt blue, and lead white…

This body of work is one among many inspired by nature, including insects and plants, for this artist whose work is also informed by both indigenous Mexican traditions and European art.
