The Mother, fragment of The Family

Adolfo Wildt (1868-1931)
1922, Marble

The woman’s face is a fragment of the sculpture group entitled La Famiglia (The Family) measuring four metres in height. It was presented at the Venice Biennial in 1922. The group, on the highly polished surface of an upwardly curved background sheet recalling a metaphysical niche, was composed of the figure of a man and a woman, but it was destroyed in bombing in Milan in 1943.
